Hamlet (The Arden Shakespeare)

'This new edition of Hamlet, although wholly independent of that with which Edward Dowden inaugurated the original Arden Shakespeare some eighty years ago, has necessarily the same broad aims. These, as Dowden's opening statement announced them, are to give a trustworthy text, to show the relation of the text to its Quarto and Folio sources, and to add explanatory notes. The plan of an Arden volume, as it has later developed, has come to require also a full-scale introduction discussing such matters as date, text, source, and critical interpretation in a way that would not have been possible, if at that time at all, in Dowden's brief twenty pages.' - From the preface by editor Harold Jenkins (1982)
