Judith Herzberg was born in 1934 in Amsterdam. She made her debut in the sixties as a poetess, but devoted herself since the beginning of the seventies to translations and the writing of drama, TV plays, film scenarios and texts for musical theatre. She is generally considered to be the most important Dutch playwright of our times.

Scratch is about possession and what it does to people. Ina, a divorced woman of about seventy years old, has a burglar in her house. He always comes at night, rummages through her things, but never steals anything. He does not only make a chaos of her house but also of her life and her feelings. Everything is unsettled. Is it just a fantasy of a lonely old woman, longing for attention? That is what her busy children suspiciously tend to think. And then Ina dies...
